Samsung Omnia Phone SGH-i900 AT&T

September 5th, 2008

Samsung OMNIA is possibly the best ever smartphone that Samsung has ever built. OMNIA is definitely a better name than SGH-i900, which means ‘everything’ in Latin and ‘wish’ in Arabic. The OMNIA is essentially everything that you can possibly wish Android Communityfor on a Windows Mobile 6.1 smart phone. It brings together high performance business content, high-end design mixed with a full bag of dynamic multimedia rich experience.

The Samsung OMNIA is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and comes packed with MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, and Word). Even though the OMNIA is 100% touch screen, Samsung included an optical mouse for ease of navigation - the optical mouse is similar to what you’d find on laptops.

Released for AT&T, the Samsung Omnia (SGH-i907) is a business device running on Windows Mobile 6.1 with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel and Word). Measuring just 12.5mm thin, the ultra-thin Omnia’s centerpiece is a 3.2-inch WQVGA (240 x 400 px) touch screen. Integrating the TouchWiz UI and haptics from Synaptics, the Omnia vibrates to give users feedback when items on the screen are tapped, swept, dragged and dropped. An accelerometer auto-rotates the screen when it is tilted on the side. A trackpad and on-screen QWERTY keyboard are included for additional navigational options. A built-in 5.0-megapixel CMOS camera offers auto-focus, facial and smile detection, auto-panorama shot and image stabilizer. Internet access is fast with up to 7.2Mbps on HSDPA and Wi-Fi. GPS reception are provided for navigation and geo-tagging.

HP iPAQ 312 Series Travel Companion portable GPS

September 5th, 2008

HP’s iPAQ 312 is a strange device. Fitting somewhere between a PDA, a GPS and a mobile phone accessory, this unit packs in GPS functionality with some entertainment tools and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity to create what HP has dubbed as the ‘Travel Companion’.

Performing well in a number of areas, HP’s iPAQ 312 is a bit of a jack of all trades. While the media playback features are a bit of a gimmick, the GPS is robust and the Bluetooth hands-free functions well, making this a solid choice for users who have yet to jump on the GPS bandwagon.

Stylishly elegant and loaded with innovative features, the HP iPAQ 312 Series Travel Companion with advanced, high-definition 3D navigation system provides an immersive experience to get you to your destination with ease.

Hp iPaq rx5900 Travel Companion

September 5th, 2008

Traditional PDAs are on the verge of extinction. They’re being phased out in favor of smart phones, which combine PDA functions with cell phones. But Hewlett-Packard is trying to give the PDA one last fighting chance with its iPAQ rx5900 Travel Companion.

The iPAQ Travel Companion combines a GPS receiver with a traditional PDA. I’ve been testing the iPAQ for several weeks. While I’ve found a great deal to admire, I’ve also been disappointed–if not downright confounded–by the navigation guidance I received.

Whether for business, for pleasure, or a little of both, the HP iPAQ Travel Companion helps you make the most of your travels whether they take you around town or around the world. The premier GPS navigation system guides you to virtually anywhere with ease. Everything is pre-installed and ready to use. Just turn it on and go. The thin, stylish design fits simply in the car and is easy to take with you wherever you travel. Plus, your HP iPAQ Travel Companion is full-function Windows Mobile 5.0 handheld.

The bad: The HP iPaq rx5900 Travel Companion was slow to acquire an initial satellite fix and had subpar battery life. The stylus is also placed in an awkward location.

The good: The sleek and travel-friendly HP iPaq rx5900 Travel Companion offers integrated GPS, TomTom Navigator software, and useful travel tools. The Windows Mobile handheld also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

8MP camera LG’s KC910 ships in October

September 5th, 2008

The LG KC910 is a successor to the Viewty and it’s no image-slouch: there’s an 8-megapixel cam in that shiny body with a xenon flash, Schneider-Kreuznach lens, and shooting up to ISO 1600. It also does VGA video at 30fps and can do high-speed 120fps filming, though this is at QVGA resolution. There’s even GPS for geotagging your imagery and navigation.

LG just officially announced to us the successor of the Viewty, the KC910. It is an all-in-one multimedia phone, sporting 8-megapixel camera, Dolby sound for music, and DivX and XviD support for video playback. At 14mm thickness, LG announces the KC910 as the slimmest 8MP phone on the market. It has Xenon flash, Schneider-Kreuznach lens, ISO up to 1600 and can capture video in VGA resolution at 30fps and in QVGA at up to 120fps for slow motion effect. Thanks to a built-in GPS, the photos can be geo tagged with the coordinates of the place they are taken at.

Other camera features include option for manual focus, face, smile and blink detection and digital image stabilizer. The KC910 is a quad-band GSM with support for HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, has Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, microSD slot for up to 8GB of memory, 3-inch WQVGA 240×400 touch display and TV-out for watching images or videos on larger screen. There is no information if it will run on the same interface as the Viewty and the KF700, or on a new one. LG says that it will come to the market in October of this year.

The cellphone even has a set of auto-options you normally see on full digital cameras: with face detection, automatic blink-avoidance detection, smile detection and a digital image stabilization mode. Amazingly there’s even a manual-focus option, which should please photography fans.

Nearly two months ago we teased you with a mocking mock-up of LG\'s upcoming KC910 cellphone, but now over at Phone Arena there\'s a real image, and official specs.

The flip phone has been branded the 6550 in Europe. Nokia have packed a host of features into this cell phone, and they hope that this will be enough to persuade us to purchase it.

The Nokia 6650, previously a T-Mobile (EU) exclusive handset, is headed to the USA and will be carried by the operator AT&T. Samsung X360 Laptop

September 4th, 2008

It’s pretty clear where Samsung is going with the X360 laptop when you notice it’s branded it as “lighter than air” and say it’s the “lightest notebook in its 13.3 inch class” since it weighs just 1.27 kg. Inside there’s a 45nm Core 2 Duo mobile processor, mated to a 1280 x 800 pixel LED-backlit screen, and the machine has no internal DVD drive: instead it comes with an external one. Sounds a little familiar, no? But the battery life is claimed to be 10 hours, by Samsung, and it’s got a full array of ports, including an RJ45 socket for wired LAN, a mic-in, three USB 2.0 sockets, a PCI express card slot and a HDMI socket. Somewhat strangely it’s also been “sprinkled” with nano silver ion powder to keep the keyboard bacteria-free. It’ll be available in September in some European countries, and Russia, China and Hong Kong, but there’s no info on the US release or pricing. Extensive press release below.

Berlin, Germany, August 29, 2008 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a market leader in consumer electronics and world leader in IT technology, today lifted the lid on the most innovative addition to its ever expanding notebook range – the ultra-lightweight Samsung X360. Capable of meeting the extreme performance and connectivity needs of the new aristocrats of the mobile world, the X360 sets a completely new standard in mobile computing – offering a comprehensive set of features unlike anything of its kind on the market.

samsung_X360_laptopEven though it is the lightest notebook in its 13.3 inch class, weighing a miniscule 1.27 kg*, the Samsung X360 incorporates all of the extensive functionality demanded by ultra mobile and results-driven professionals. Unlike the claims of some other “light” notebooks, the X360 is fully featured without compromise, including 3 USB ports, a built-in HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connection, a 34mm express card slot and VGA output. For fast and easy transfer of documents, images, video or music it incorporates a highly flexible 7 in 1 memory card reader, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR* (Enhanced Data Rate) and super-fast 802.11n wireless technology. It also boasts an integrated digital motion camera, so it’s easy to stay in touch with colleagues or friends using video-conferencing or live messaging. But there is more, for business and home office users the X360 incorporates a 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN connection and support for Samsung P-Dock, docking station – which simplifies cabling and provides a ’single click’ connection and easy access to a wide variety of ports..

“The X360 pushes back the boundaries of form and function to deliver real style with substance,” said HS Kim, Executive Vice President of Samsung Computer Systems Division. “It offers a tremendous reduction in size and weight but without compromising on functionality, so users have everything they need for life on the move,” Mr. Kim added.

The X360 will be available from September this year in European countries including UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and also in Russia, China and Hong Kong.

The XO-1 OLPC Laptop for Children

September 4th, 2008

laptops_for_childreenThe mission of One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. In order to accomplish our goal, we need people who believe in what we’re doing and want to help make education for the world’s children a priority, not a privilege. laptopgiving.org

The XO-1, previously known as the $100 Laptop or Children’s Machine, is an inexpensive laptop computer intended to be distributed to children in developing countries around the world, to provide them with access to knowledge, and opportunities to “explore, experiment and express themselves” (constructionist learning). The laptop is developed by the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) social welfare organization, and manufactured by the Taiwanese computer company, Quanta Computer.

The laptops can be sold to governments and issued to children by schools on a basis of one laptop per child. Pricing is currently set to start at US$188 and the goal is to reach the $100 mark in 2008. Approximately 500 developer boards (Alpha-1) were distributed in mid-2006; 875 working prototypes (Beta 1) were delivered in late 2006; 2400 Beta-2 machines were distributed at the end of February 2007; full-scale production started November 6, 2007. Quanta Computer, the project’s contract manufacturer, said in February 2007 that it had confirmed orders for one million units. It indicated it could ship five million to ten million units that year because seven nations have committed to buy the XO-1 for their schoolchildren: Argentina, Brazil, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Thailand, and Uruguay. Quanta plans to offer machines very similar to the XO machine on the open market.

The rugged, low-power computers contain flash memory instead of a hard drive and use Linux as their operating system. Mobile ad-hoc networking is used to allow many machines to share Internet access from one connection.

This famous netbook made much noise on the Internet from the very beginning. Its developers pursued the idea to help children of Africa and other developing countries with really cheap laptops - 100 dollars for unit. It seems unbelievable, but for this price gadget offers all modern features such as Wi-Fi, built-in webcam and touchscreen. Of course, the internal hardware is not very advanced, with only 256 MB of RAM and 1 GB of internal flash memory. Heart of this laptop will be specially crafted low-power processor from AMD - AMD Geode LX700. gadgets-reviews.com
